Urinary Tract Infection

Pharmacy First is an NHS service which enables you to get expert advice and treatment for a urinary tract infection from our pharmacy, without needing you to see your GP.

A urinary tract infection can be treated in the pharmacy. If you or your child need advice you can come to our pharmacy and get in touch with our pharmacists who will provide you with expert advice.

What is a UTI?
  • A urinary tract infection (UTI), also called a bladder infection, happens when bacteria get into your urinary tract.

  • It’s very common in women and can cause discomfort or burning when you pee.

  • Usually not serious, but it can be uncomfortable and sometimes needs treatment.

  • Burning or stinging when urinating

  • Feeling like you need to pee urgently or more often

  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine

  • Lower tummy pain or feeling generally unwell

  • Quick assessment by a pharmacist – no GP appointment needed.

  • Immediate treatment for women aged 16–64.

  • Advice on relieving symptoms and preventing future infections.

  • This service is for women aged 16–64.

  • Not suitable if you have a high fever, severe back pain, vomiting, or are pregnant – in these cases, see your GP or NHS 111.

  • Mild UTIs sometimes improve on their own within a few days.

  • Pharmacists may provide antibiotics if needed.

  • Drink plenty of water to help flush out bacteria.

  • Pain relief and products containing sodium citrate can ease discomfort.

  • Complete the full course of treatment if antibiotics are prescribed.

  • Wipe front to back after using the toilet

  • Drink plenty of fluids daily

  • Urinate after sex

  • Avoid holding urine for long periods

  • If symptoms don’t improve in a few days

  • If UTIs keep coming back

  • If you experience fever, shaking, severe back pain, or vomiting

  • Pregnant women should contact their GP immediately
