Pharmacy First
Sore throat
Pharmacy First is an NHS service which enables you to get expert advice and treatment for a sore throat from our pharmacy, without needing you to see your GP.
Mostly sore throats can be treated in the pharmacy. If you or your child need advice you can come to our pharmacy and get in touch with our pharmacists who will provide you with expert advice.
What is a sore throat & tonsillitis?
A sore throat is irritation or pain in the throat, often worse when swallowing. It’s usually caused by viruses like colds or flu, but can sometimes be bacterial.
Tonsillitis happens when the tonsils at the back of the throat become red, swollen, and sore. It’s usually viral, but sometimes a bacterial infection (like strep throat) can cause it.
What are symptoms of a sore throat & tonsilits?
Scratchy or painful throat
Redness at the back of the mouth
Swollen or red tonsils
Bad breath
Swollen glands in the neck
Fever, tiredness, headache, or earache (common with tonsillitis)
Self-care & Treatment
Most sore throats get better on their own. To feel better you can:
Drink plenty of fluids (avoid very hot drinks)
Eat soft, cool foods like yoghurt or mashed potato
Rest and avoid smoky places
Suck lozenges or ice lollies (not for young children)
Gargle warm saltwater (adults only)
Medicines that may help:
Paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever
Lozenges or sprays from the pharmacy to soothe the throat
Antibiotics are only needed if a doctor suspects a bacterial infection
When to seek medical help
Call NHS 111 or see a doctor if:
Your sore throat lasts more than a week
You have a high temperature or feel very unwell
You have a weakened immune system
Call 999 or go to A&E if:
You’re struggling to swallow or breathe
You’re drooling or making noisy breathing sounds
